The Secret (by Karl)

It used to be Tuesday’s, then Monday’s and now Friday’s.

We’ve moved so much since being in Africa that I can’t remember. But there is always one way to tell for sure.

What am I talking about? Trash day.

How do you know? Well, the day before trash day people put their trash in the road for it to get picked up.

The night before people start coming out from the townships to dig through your trash.

The first time I was startled to see two guys who had completely emptied our can… taking whatever they could salvage to eat, use or perhaps sell.

We’ve all heard the term “the haves and have nots”.

Trash day is a stark reminder to me of this principal.

We ask ourselves… “What can I do”? “How can I help fight this poverty that forces people to dig through my trash”?

There are thousands of people in Africa doing just this – fighting poverty. Billions of dollars in aid has come into Africa to fight poverty. There are NGO’s (Non Government Agencies) everywhere you turn. Everyone is trying to find the next best new thing to fight poverty. Why is it NOT working?

I was talking with someone the other day about the poverty (and drug use, AIDS, gangs etc) in Ocean View.

They had asked me what I did there. I told them we do community development to help alleviate poverty and other social ills of the township. I explained that Ocean View was however a very tough community to work in. The idea in Ocean View that "life will never change" is quite common and, in itself, part of the problem.

I also explained that we do church planting - we teach people how to have Bible studies in their homes with the hopes that they turn into simple house churches.

In the process, we hope that people learn to hear from God what He has for their lives.

So, what does He want them to hear?

He wants them to know that they are His children. That they were created in His image. That He loves them like no other and cares for their every need. He has a plan for their life full of His love and mercy. He wants them to know that He sees them dig through trash and it hurts His heart when they do.

In Isaiah 58, there is an amazing promise for us when we care for those who dig through our trash.

A promise that actually blows my mind. It says…

“...And if you offer yourself to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted one, then your light will shine in the darkness, and your light will be like noonday. The Lord will always lead you, and satisfy you in a parched land, and strengthen your bones. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring whose waters never run dry."

Isn’t that what we all want? For the Lord to always lead us…to satisfy us…to strengthen us? Don’t we want lives overflowing with goodness?

I love this scripture that gives us the secret to this kind of fulfillment: “offer yourself to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted one.”

Wow!
