We are priviledged to focus on Ocean View, although we also work in nearby Masiphumelele.

Ocean View (coloured community)

  • Population: 30,000
  • Ethnic background: Khoi-San group and white
  • Language: Afrikaans and English
  • HIV infection rate: 8-13%
  • Number of churches: over 200
  • Challenges: huge unemployment, widespread drug use, alcoholism, gossip, gangs, prostitution and violence.

Masiphumelele (black community)

  • Population: 25,000 – 35,000
  • Ethnic background: Eastern Cape, other parts of South Africa, Somalia, Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries
  • Language: Xhosa
  • HIV infection rate: 20-40% (as a result, there are many orphaned children and many who have to support families on their own)
  • Housing: 9 out of 10 homes are shacks
